Under-eye dark circles, bags or hollows: which treatment fits?
Dark circles, puffiness and hollows can look similar in a photograph but arise from different tissues. The safest plan begins by naming the dominant problem.
Book a consultation
Under-eye treatment in Chennai should not begin with a product or injection. It begins with diagnosis. The periorbital region can look dark because of pigment, visible vessels, shadow from a hollow, eyelid bags, allergy-related rubbing or a mixture of these. Treating the wrong component may do little or make puffiness more obvious.
Ask what changes with lighting. A shadow that improves when the cheek is gently lifted suggests volume and structure. Brown colour that remains in even light suggests pigment. Blue or purple tone may reflect thin skin and vessels. Morning swelling, seasonal itch or blocked nose points toward another pathway.
Pigment under the eyes
Periorbital hyperpigmentation can be constitutional, worsened by sun or follow eczema and rubbing. Sunscreen, sunglasses and control of allergy or dermatitis are basic steps. Prescription brightening products must be chosen carefully because eyelid skin is thin and easily irritated.
Peels or laser may suit selected pigment patterns, but settings near the eye require experienced hands and proper metal ocular protection when indicated. A surface brightening procedure cannot remove a deep hollow that creates shadow.
Bags, fluid and festoons
True lower-eyelid bags usually reflect protruding fat, while morning puffiness may be fluid. Malar mounds and festoons sit lower over the cheek and are not the same as a tear-trough hollow. Salt, sleep and allergy can influence swelling, but established fat pads often need a surgical opinion rather than repeated filler.
Adding volume beneath already puffy tissue can worsen heaviness. This is why an assessment should include the lower lid, cheek support and skin quality—not only the darkest line in a selfie.

Hollows and tear-trough shadow
A hollow is a contour problem between the lower eyelid and cheek. Hyaluronic-acid filler can improve selected moderate or severe hollows, and controlled trials report benefit in appropriately chosen adults. Yet the region has complex anatomy and recognised risks, including persistent swelling, lumps, colour change and rare vascular complications.
Some people are better treated by supporting the midface, using a small amount elsewhere, or avoiding filler. Previous filler should be identified because swelling or migration can imitate a new hollow. Surgery may be more suitable when bags or excess skin dominate.
Texture and fine lines
Fine crepey skin is different again. Skin care, sun protection, selected laser resurfacing, SmoothEye-type Er:YAG treatment, polynucleotides or other doctor-led options may be discussed depending on skin tone, downtime and evidence. No single session can correct pigment, hollow, bag and laxity together.
Seek medical review promptly for one-sided sudden swelling, pain, redness, double vision, vision loss or a new eyelid droop. These are not routine cosmetic concerns.
Choosing under-eye treatment in Chennai
When comparing an aesthetic clinic in Chennai, ask for an explanation of whether the main issue is pigment, vessel, fluid, fat, hollow or texture. The discussion should include alternatives, limits and the option of referral to an oculoplastic surgeon.

Questions we are asked
Why do my under-eyes look dark even without pigmentation?
A hollow, visible vessels or puffiness can cast a shadow that looks like pigment. Consistent lighting and an in-person examination help separate these causes.
Can filler remove under-eye bags?
Filler does not remove protruding fat and may worsen swelling in some people. Bags may need a surgical opinion, while filler is reserved for selected hollows.
Are lasers safe near the eyes?
Selected lasers can be used by trained clinicians with the correct indication and eye protection. The wavelength, device, skin type and whether treatment is on the eyelid all matter.
What causes morning under-eye puffiness?
Fluid shift, allergy, rubbing, sleep position and salt can contribute. Persistent or one-sided swelling needs assessment rather than repeated cosmetic treatment.
How do I choose an under-eye clinic in Chennai?
Look for a clinician who names the dominant problem, discusses non-injection and surgical options, and explains risks without promising one procedure will fix every component.
