Laser hair reduction works by heating pigment in the hair follicle while protecting the surrounding skin. Skin tone, hair colour and thickness, treatment area, tan, hormonal pattern, device and operator all affect that balance.

A premium platform used with unsuitable settings can cause burns or pigment change. A well-maintained device in trained hands, with correct wavelength and cooling, is far more meaningful than a slogan about one machine working for everyone.

Wavelengths used for laser hair reduction

Long-pulsed alexandrite around 755 nm is efficient for dark hair on lighter skin but requires caution as skin melanin increases. Diode systems commonly operate around 800–810 nm and can cover a range of skin types when parameters and cooling are appropriate. Long-pulsed 1064 nm Nd:YAG interacts less with surface melanin and is widely used for darker Fitzpatrick skin types, though fine hair may respond differently.

Wavelength is only one setting. Pulse duration controls how quickly heat is delivered. Spot size affects penetration and coverage. Fluence, repetition rate and contact or air cooling must be adjusted for the body area, hair and skin. Recent sun exposure or tanning can change safe parameters.

A test spot may be useful for higher-risk skin or a new device. The expected immediate endpoint is usually perifollicular redness and swelling, not a visible beam, smoke or charred skin. Both patient and clinician need opaque wavelength-appropriate eye protection.

SP Dynamis NX Line and Nd:YAG hair reduction

The Fotona SP Dynamis NX Line includes a long-pulsed 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser used for hair reduction and other indications. Its capability does not create the treatment plan by itself. The doctor still selects mode, handpiece, spot size, energy, pulse and cooling for the individual.
